| "Human beings need to form relationships with others within
families and communities. They need to live in an atmosphere of trust,
security, and mutual affection. They need to be valued, accepted
and supported in real and warm relationships." |
| (Charter of L'Arche) |
| Views from assistants |
| "L'Arche is not really about learning,
it's about unlearning. It is about forgetting all those things that
society teaches us. I have spent my life so far trying to be adequate
and acceptable, yet have never been satisfied. There is always more
to learn, more to know, more to own, more people to meet, more experiences
to gain and yes, more love to be found." |

| Becoming a house assistant |
| Role of an assistant |
| An assistant participates in the mission
of L’Arche by helping to create home for and with people who
have learning disabilities. These homes reflect values of personal
dignity, celebration and honest relationships. |
An
assistant is someone who supports people with learning disabilities
to do things, and who is, above all, a friend. Assistants generally
stay from a year upwards though summer and university placements may
be possible. Whatever your stage of life, whatever your background
and experience, L'Arche has something to offer, and so do you. We
believe that as we live our ordinary moments together we will experience
something extraordinary and develop long lasting relationships. |
| We need you! |
| Join us as an assistant. We welcome
applications from anyone, anywhere in the world (there are some visa
restrictions). We expect that you will be able to speak English.
If possible, we ask you to visit your nearest L'Arche Community so
that you can experience L'Arche in your own culture before considering
coming to the United Kingdom. |
